A Welcome Home Celebration | Apollo 11 Splashdown 50 Years Later

Jul 24, 2019 10:00 AM - Jul 24, 2019 04:00 PM Rocket Garden

After completing the monumental Apollo 11 Moon landing, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins safely splashed back into the Pacific Ocean on July 24, 1969. As the final anniversary event in the timeline of the mission, Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex will host a welcome home celebration, signifying the safe return of the astronauts back on Earth.

The event begins at 10:00 AM in the Rocket Garden and will include on-going family-friendly activities, life-sized cut out photo opportunities and classic cars from the 1960s.  Twice during the day, guests can watch historic footage of the splashdown events, 50 years later to the day. Footage will be displayed on our jumbo monitor and will cover everything from the spacecraft’s splashdown, recovery, quarantine and the ticker tape parade that followed a couple weeks after the astronauts’ return. Join us at 12:20 PM and 3:20 PM for the presentation with a visitor complex communicator.

There will also be a mobile DJ taking the music beyond the Rocket Garden and we welcome all guests to join in on the party!

The three Apollo 11 crew men, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins, await pickup by a helicopter from the USS Hornet, prime recovery ship for the historic Apollo 11 lunar landing mission. The fourth man in the life raft is a United States Navy underwater demolition team swimmer.
